Common Scams - Taxpayer Beware!
There are several tax scams that are currently being perpetrated by dishonest people. Protect yourself and look up the information to make sure that it is not a scam! Below are some common scams occurring right now.
Scam 1
Someone calls you and tells you that you owe the IRS money and that a warrant has been issued for your arrest.
This is not true. The IRS will not contact you by phone unless you specifically request them to contact you about a specific issue. They will always send you a certified letter first telling you the problem and letting you try to resolve it on your own.
Scam 2
Someone sends you a letter/email saying that you owe the IRS and you should call a number to deal with it.
The IRS will never contact you via email so automatically ignore that one. As for the letter, carefully read it. Does it say it is from the IRS? Does it tell you the issue and give you a return letter to resolve it? That kind of letter is probably a real letter from the IRS. If, however, the letter demands immediate payment and lists a website, it is probably a scam. Call me or bring it in and I will let you know.
Scams are preying on your fear of the IRS and owing taxes. Don't feel scared. Consult me immediately and ask for help. If it is a true letter, I will help you to figure out the issue. If it is a scam, I can tell you immediately. Be cautious! Don't share any sensitive information with anyone via the phone, email, or letter.
